Yankee's Analyst Refers to Suzuki's Bat as "Chopstick"
New York City- It was the bottom of the 11th inning, and iconic Japanese baseball player Ichiro Suzuki was up to the plate against the Boston Red Sox when Yankee's analyst David Cone said, "Probably a ball. Suzuki...with the chopstick."
Cone's insensitive comments started a social media fire storm during the game Tuesday night and into Wednesday. "We don't know David Cone's intent in referring to Ichiro Suzuki's bat as a chopstick," said Bill Yoshino, JACL's Midwest Regional Director. "However we do know the use of stereotypes has the power to demean and marginalize their intended target. Stereotypes reduce individuals and groups of people to caricatures that provide little information and no understanding about their character."
